What I talk about pivot, when I talk about pivot

What I talk about pivot, when I talk about pivot
Mike “Wags” Wagner's Damascene moment in Billions

At some point in life, we all face a crossroad. BAU or the unpaved road. And usually, if you wanted to reach that next destination, you would need a pivot. Perhaps pick up some new skills, explore a new route, assemble a new crew.

With that in mind and after a moderately successful and diverse career, by conventional standard, I need to pivot. After all, every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.

There is this famous Lao Tzu quote: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a step." Here is the full paragraph in all its majesty as interpreted by Thomas Cleary.

What is at rest is easy to hold. What has not shown up is easy to take into account. What is frail is easy to break. What is vague is easy to dispel. Do it before it exists; govern it before there's disorder. The most massive tree grows from a sprout; the highest building rises from a pile of earth; a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step. Those who contrive spoil it; those who cling lose it.

I like how to create something of substance, grasping and forcing are probably the last thing you want to do. A break is needed to recalibrate your compass.

During this sabbatical I will:

  • Explore my relationship with work, including people, culture and process – as we navigate the new world of AI-powered humanity
  • Experience for myself the joy of creating product and/or service that people will enjoy using s
  • Meeting people and bringing them together for a shared cause or passion

This is an opportunity to pause, think, and experiment with my current station in life – with eyes wide open. Keeping it fluid like Miles Davis' Bitches Brew. And I have to admit I am not the smartest guy in the room.

Sell your cleverness and buy bewilderment.
Cleverness is mere opinion, bewilderment intuition .

Join me as I embark on this new trajectory. My newsletter, delivered every Saturday, will contain a list of interesting ideas, observation and people, and an update on projects I am working on. I hope it will be useful to you, especially those who are pivoting or contemplating a pivot. At the very least I promise it will be entertaining.
